This site is an experimental example of new database technology from
Flixco Pty Limited.
The site covers 1860 to 1947. This period has steam engines replacing sails as the main propulsion, breech loading guns replacing muzzle loaders, steel replacing iron for hull constuction and for armour plate. Warships are beginning to adopt the general arrangements that will persist through WW2.
The aim of this site is to cover all fighting warships of all
countries
down to torpedo boats and escort vessels. Most of the technical data is stored on the
ship classes
to which the
ships
belonged. A start has been made on the
activities
that the ships were involved in: from
wars
and planned
operations
through to
engagements
and
accidents.
Persons
were
posted
to
units
with
unit types
ranging from individual
ships
through
formations
and
area commands
to
national governments
and
sovereign states.
Persons held
ranks
during the postings and some acquired
decorations.
Ships carried and were attacked by
aircraft models
that were organised into
air units
and
air formations.
Ship Classes
were fitted with
equipments
such as
turret models
mounting
gun models
and with
sensors.
Countries
had many
enterprises
both government and private, including
shipbuilders,
aircraft manufacturers
and
ordnance factories.
The passage of time is covered by
chronologies
and
time periods.
The span of the site is covered in the
full site map
which is a good start to browsing.
Almost every phrase is a link and there is little need to ever return to this Home page as a comprehensive Nav Bars are provided to the left and at the top.
For a general sampling of what is on offer try the
Site Highlights.
The data is organised by Types and the associations between Types.
Most things are browsable from the
Master Index.
