Once you leave the home page, almost every phrase of every page is a link, including the numbers and column and field headings. Where ever you are in the site, there are usually other ways of looking at the current subject on offer in the navigation areas at the left and top. Home Button: Just follow your interests, don't worry about getting lost. There is always the HOME button (NavalHistory via Flix) at the top of every page. Finding Something Using An Index: First browse to Master Index on the home page, then to the appropriate Index Query, then to the desired thing. Most heavily populated types in the crumb chain at the top will offer one or more indexes in their dropdowns. Finding Something By Narrowing A Type: First select the desired major type from the left bar or the first phrase of the top bar. The resulting page will offer more specifc types and or all the members of the type. So either continue to drill down into the types or pick the desired thing when you see it. You can also drill down into the types using the [Drill] operation on the top bar. Related Pages: The NavBox frequently offers other views of the same subject as Related Pages. Some of these are comparisons between the present subject and other similar things. Currently some related pages are offered even if they would result in no useful data. We will fix this eventually. Just use the Back button and perhaps think a bit before pressing. Finding Something By Searching: This search is intended to find "things", so type the name of the thing you want as completely as possible. The order of words is not very important, but at present the search is poor with mis-spellings. There is no facility for OR or AND as the search is intended to locate "things" not paragraphs of "text". You can search for text by using the prefix text: in a similar way to ship: but as a browser level user of this system you won't be able to do much with the text. You can restrict the search to only ships by typing ship: bismarck It is quite possible for a few things to have the same name. All will be presented for you to browse amongst. As even reports are "things", you can type report: gun model and get a list of the prepared reports about gun models. Browsing To Headings: You can browse to most column headings and field names for an explanation and to get access to more general reports and information. Reports: There are many reports available on almost every type of thing. Try the Master Report Index or the reports provided at the bottom of every type page (such as Ship, Ship Class etc). Reports allow comparisons and statistics to be presented. Posing Queries: You can't from this entrance to the web site. This is just HTML pages for browsing. You need to have an account and use the Members button at the top of every page. Back Button: Just use the browser's Back Button. By far the easiest is Opera with its mouse gestures. There is lots of going back and forward at a Flix site. There are Back, Top and Forward buttons in the Footer Bar at the bottom of every page. Printing And Saving Pages: Just use the normal browser facilities. Every page on this site is just correctly formed HTML. You can safely print it, save it, attach it to emails, link to it. Even when attached to an email all links will remain live and lead into the originating web site at the correct page. Funny Text: The data for every page is automatically assembled under the control of some simple view logic. Some of the text is automatically assembled. It is a bit stilted. We will be able to improve it somewhat. The underlying system has the capability to operate in multiple systems of numeric units and to some extent in numbers of languages simultaneously but this has not been brought out yet. It might be a bit funny in English but its French is likely to be worse. Coloured Pages: As you move around the site you will encounter Coloured Pages. These are quite different from the normal white pages and you won't see many individual ships or turrets. Rather they give wider information about ships or turrets in general. They will require careful reading initially. Web Strippers: Most of the phrases on every page are links. There are hundreds of thousands of pages in this site. A web stripper following the Robot rules will take 18,000 pages of 300Mb. It is not possible to use a web stripper here. To stop wasting our time and your time, the use of web strippers is automatically detected. |
