Aim:
To deny the area to the Japanese, in particular to stop the completion of the airfield on Guadalcanal and to remove the seaplane base on Tulagi. To use the area for further offensive operations in the
Solomon Islands.
Results:
The Japanese were taken by surprise and the landing was almost unopposed. The final capture of the island took six months and much bitter fighting.
