	Summary	Details
	French troops were massacred by local Chinese forces.	French troops were marching to replace the Chinese forces at Langson, under the terms of an agreement to end the conflict over Tonkin. Perhaps due to a misunderstanding or lack of communications, the local Chinese forces did not honour the agreement and massacred the French. The French were outraged and determined to avenge the incident even though the Chinese government seeme not to be directly responsible.
