The four US Grumman F4F Wildcats straffed HIJMS Tenryu causing damage.
The remaining ships made smoke and retired to the south west.
HIJMS Kisaragi was attacked by the US Grumman F4F Wildcats when 30 miles south west of Wake. Hits on her depth charges caused an explosion and she sunk with all hands.

HIJMS Yubari retires to south west covering remaining destroyer transport carrying other half of SNLF troops. Battery on Wilkes Island hit one of the other transports.
HIJMS Hayate, HIJMS Oite and HIJMS Mochizuki turn directly towards Wilkes Island battery. HIJMS Hayate is hit and explodes. HIJMS Oite is hit with 19 wounded.
